Alberta
Holiday pay in Alberta
- $3,723.08wages over four weeks
- 20÷ days worked
- $186.15= average daily wage
Who gets it
Most employees qualify if the holiday is a regular workday for them, or if they worked on a holiday that is not a regular workday. An employee is not eligible who worked fewer than 30 workdays in the 12 months before the holiday, who was absent when scheduled to work on the holiday, or who was absent on the last scheduled day before or first scheduled day after it without the employer's consent.
How it is worked out
Average daily wage: the employee's wages divided by the days worked, over one of two four-week periods the employer chooses. Overtime pay is excluded.
- Take-home $134.21
- Income tax $37.84
- CPP $11.07
- EI $3.03
If you work the day
Holiday on a regular workday, worked: 1.5 times usual pay for the hours worked plus the average daily wage, or usual pay for the hours worked plus a future paid day off at the average daily wage. Holiday that is not a regular workday, worked: 1.5 times usual pay for the hours worked.
For the median earner, working a regular-workday holiday on the first option pays $465.38 for the day: 1.5 times usual pay for the hours worked, $279.23, on top of the $186.15. The example assumes a five-day week and the normal day’s hours.
Drained's angle
What tax takes from holiday pay
- Take-home $201.29
- Income tax $56.78
- CPP $16.61
- EI $4.55
Holiday pay is wages, so it is taxed like any other day’s wages. The paid day off costs the worker $51.94 in income tax, CPP and EI, 27.9% of the day. The premium for working the day is taxed at the rate on the worker’s next dollar: income tax takes $56.78, CPP $16.61 and EI $4.55. The government takes 27.9% of the reward for working the day the law says you should be off.
Method: the Alberta tax calculator’s engine, run twice on annual income, with and without the holiday money; the difference is what that money was taxed. It uses the 2026 rates. It is a worked example for one worker, not payroll: an employer’s withholding on a single cheque can differ.
