About Drained
Drained is an independent, Alberta-based project with one goal: make the fiscal reality of Canadian government taxation and spending impossible to ignore — by making it personal.
What we do
Most Canadians never see where their money goes. Taxes come off the paycheque, spending happens in $580-billion abstractions, and the debt grows in numbers too large to feel. We translate those abstractions into your numbers: your tax bill, your daily loss, your share of the debt, your household's transfer to Ottawa.
We have a point of view — we think the current trajectory is unsustainable and we say so plainly. But the numbers themselves are not opinions. Every figure on this site is calculated with the CRA's own methods or drawn from primary sources: the Canada Revenue Agency, the Parliamentary Budget Officer, the Department of Finance, and Statistics Canada. Where a claim depends on a projection or an estimate, we label it as one.
Check our math
The site's credibility rests entirely on its numbers, so we publish the whole methodology: every formula, every source, every accounting choice (including why we use the accumulated deficit rather than “net debt”). If you find an error, tell us — we will fix it and say so.
Independence
Drained is not affiliated with, funded by, or coordinated with any political party, candidate, or advocacy organization. We do not run ads and we do not sell data.
